The mountains receive about 200 mm of rainfall in a normal year. The Ouberg Pass 32.403788°S 20.333312°E crosses the range at an altitude of 1,404 meters, while the Bloukrans Pass crosses it northern promontory, the Bloukrans Mountain. Sutherland, in the western part of the range, is one of the coldest places in South Africa.
