The festival shows mostly new materials and has a great impact at the international level. In 2010 the Rencontres was visited by 73,000 spectators, of whom there were 11,000 foreigners, 5,000 professionals and 9,000 students.

The shows are often produced in collaboration with museums and other cultural institutions, both French and foreign. The exihibitions take place in various places of the town. Some of them, such as small ancient churches and former factories, are open to the public only during the festival.
