Overview
The game's development stalled for some time when it was dropped by Capcom. In 2002, Rockstar Games purchased the game and expanded on it. Changing from an American western to a Spaghetti Western allowed the developers to add more blood, over-the-top characters and well-designed character models. The lead character seems to be an amalgamation of various Clint Eastwood-inspired characters from assorted movies. The game reproduces a grainy "film" effect and even borrows incidental music and soundtracks that are highly reminiscent of – if not taken directly from – the music of famous Spaghetti Western composer Ennio Morricone.
The main character is Red Harlow. As a child his parents were murdered by bandits; he survived the encounter but grew up swearing to find whoever killed his family. Red grew up over the years and became a bounty hunter, collecting bounties wherever his travels took him. However, after a series of unexpected trials and tribulations, Red soon finds himself in the middle of a conspiracy involving political corruption and greed. But most of all, Red may finally be able to find the person responsible for the death of his parents.
Story
The game takes place in the late 1880s. Nate Harlow and his partner “Griff” have found gold in Bear Mountain. Griff is later captured by the Mexican military and condemned to be shot as a spy. He agrees to give the General, Javier Diego, half of the gold on Bear Mountain if he spares his life. Diego agrees.
Later, the General sends Colonel Daren, his right-hand man, to kill Nate Harlow and his family. Daren shoots Nate and his wife, but his son, Red, manages to shoot Daren’s arm off and escape into the woods.
Red grows up to be a bounty hunter. The game begins with him battling a gang led by Bloody Tom. Hoping to claim the bounty on the gang, he takes the bodies to the town of Widow’s Patch. In Widow’s Patch, he is attacked by the Ugly Chris gang. He and the sheriff are able to eliminate the gang, but the sheriff is badly wounded, and has to travel to the town of Brimstone for a doctor. So eventually Red and the Sheriff get on a train.
After Red drops off the sheriff at Brimstone, the sheriff of Brimstone asks Red to take care of some criminals for him. After they are killed, he asks for the bounty on the criminals' heads, but the bank manager says to him that the gold wagon has not arrived yet; then he learns that one of the townsfolk, Annie Stoakes, is in danger of losing her farm to the bank, whose manager, Griff, also owns the Bear Mountain gold mine. Remembering that his family was killed over that mine, he goes to talk to her to find out more information. This leads him to the sheriff of Brimstone, where he finds out that General Diego and Colonel Daren killed his parents, and that there is a bounty on them. Red goes out and kills them both.
He later learns during a quick-draw competition, called the Battle Royale, that the governor is Griff, who sold his parents to General Diego. Griff orders Red to be killed by Mr. Kelley, the previous year’s winner, but Red kills Kelley and pursues Griff to his mansion. There, Red shoots Griff in a quick-draw showdown.
After Red kills Griff, the sheriff offers Red some gold, but he refuses it, instead taking Griff's Scorpion Pistol. Red says "It never was about the money".
Characters
- Red Harlow: The hero of the game, Red is the son of Nate Harlow and Falling Star, a Native American of the Red Wolf Tribe. After witnessing his parent's brutal murder by Colonel Daren, he becomes a bounty hunter. After arriving at Brimstone, he realises that his prey may be getting closer. Red would go on to pursue and successfully attain many bounties until finally finding and brutally killing Governor Griffin in his mansion, the man who was behind the murder of his family.
- Jack Swift: An English duelist, Jack Swift was hired by circusman Preston O'Leary to be a trickshooter. When he arrived in the West, Jack was kidnapped by Professor Perry, a former member of the circus and O' Leary's killer. It was this act that led Swift into meeting Red Harlow. Near the end Red and company infiltrate Governor Griffon's mansion, just before Red and the Buffalo Soldier get to the roof to confront Griffon, Jack decides to stay behind to hold the rest of Griffon's guards back. Red goes to the rooftop and gets his revenge. Jack is wounded during the infiltrate the mayor's mansion but lives at the end.
- Annie Stoakes: Annie owns a ranch that Governor Griffon can't wait to get his hands on. Annie denied all offers, so Griffon began to make her life difficult. When local ruffians torched her ranch, Red gave her 5,000 dollars to get her ranch back. She helps Red and Jack infiltrate the mayor's mansion.
- Shadow Wolf: A member of the Red Wolf Tribe and Red's cousin. He and all the tribe believe that Red had died along with his parents. However, when Shadow Wolf realized Red was alive, he was desperate to reunite with his cousin. Shadow Wolf would rescue his cousin Red from Colonel Daren, but would later die following a confrontation with the colonel at Fort Diego.
- Buffalo Soldier: A black member of the U.S Army, (he also claimed to be a slave at one point and vowed never to do it again) Buffalo displeased General Diego, which led to his incarceration in Diego's jail. Buffalo was rescued by Shadow Wolf and he quickly ran to warn Governor Griffon of Diego's plan. Buffalo's pleas fell on deaf ears and once again, he was thrown into jail (the only thing he did wrong was going to Griffon for help). He was freed by Red and his friends when they were about to confront the governor. He was injured but luckily survived.
- General Javier Diego: General Diego fought a series of border wars with the U.S, who placed a high bounty on his head. After capturing a bridge across the Rio Grande, Diego captured a man called 'Griff' who informed Diego of a gold mine that he and his partner Nate owned. Diego sent his loyal lieutenant, Colonel Daren, to kill Nate. This act of murder made Griff the Governor and Diego two of the richest men in the West. General Diego continued to be Griffon's partner. Diego was able to construct some of the most advanced weapons such as Colonel Daren's cannon and an armored train created using and capable of carrying the general's new abundance of wealth. However, the train's armor was unable to withstand an attack by Red Harlow who had tracked the General down after his fight at Fort Diego. The general, attempting to fight with cowardly tactics, was killed by Red Harlow but not before pleading to live. (based on Pancho Villa).
- Colonel Daren: Daren is General Diego's right hand man who led the attack on Nate Harlow's ranch. He had been sent to kill Nate so General Diego could have Harlow's share of the gold. Nate died, but his son Red shot off Daren's arm and escaped the Colonel who recoiled in pain. General Diego would go on to place a cannon where Colonel Daren's arm had been making the Colonel more dangerous than before. The Colonel again encountered Red Harlow and his Native American cousin Shadow Wolf at Fort Diego, where he took Shadow Wolf's life but was slain and knifed shortly after by Red. He called Red's father, Nate, a yellow belly, saying he was a coward.
- Governor Griffon: Once a good friend of Nate Harlow, Griffon had two gold encrusted guns emblazoned with a scorpion made for each himself and Nate Harlow. Griffon crossed the border and was captured by General Diego, who believed he was a spy. He made a deal with Diego saying that Diego would get half the gold in Bear Mountain on the terms that Diego would kill his former business partner. Griffon became the governor of the territory due to the large amounts of gold that he owned in Bear Mountain.
- Pig Josh: Joshua used to be a citizen of Brimstone, however, he always had a fascination with loud noises. After he blew up a bathhouse, he was run out of town. That's when Professor Perry featured him in his circus of murderous freaks. Pig Josh used dynamite to blow up good people, until Red Harlow collected his bounty. Though he is the largest person in the game, he is an extraordinary athlete and can run faster than any character.
- Mr. Black: The inhabitants of the ghost town Tarnation die suddenly and ahead of their time. The creepy undertaker of the town, Mr. Black, killed the original sheriff of Tarnation and controled the town with his outlaws and his companion, Jesse Lynch. He killed the good people with his coffin-gatling gun and takes their money and valuables. Bartlett sent Red Harlow to Tarnation to fix him.
- Mr. Kelly: Mr. Kelly is a contract killer who worked for one man to the other before he met Governor Griffon. Griffon's Battle Royale helps him sweep up outlaws in his territory. He hired Kelly to be the featured Battle Royale champion with a $5000 reward to lure the unlikables into the competition. Mr Kelly had been the champion for four years and had never fallen to an opponent, though he was eventually killed by Red.

Red Dead Revolver received mixed to generally favourable reviews. It received an average score of 75% of Game Rankings.
As of March 12 2008, Red Dead Revolver has sold 1.5 million copies according to Take-Two Interactive.
Sequel
Rumors of a sequel, Red Dead Revolver 2, were circulating around since 2005 ever since Rockstar showed a video of an Old West horseback rider running on early PlayStation 3 hardware. Rockstar was fairly secretive with a game in the works, simply known as "Old West Project".
On February 4th, 2009, Red Dead Redemption was announced for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 for a Fall 2009 release.
