The play centers around Franz Woyzeck, a modern-day soldier, who stands accused of killing his wife Marie. The evidence used against him is a widely-circulated video of him holding a knife while standing over a bleeding Marie. Woyzeck talks directly to the audience as he explores several reasons why he would have committed such an act. The motives include oppression by his superiors, exploitation by the medical profession, Marie's infidelity and a lack of religious faith. Throughout the play, Woyzeck's friends, family, employers and even Buchner himself make comments about Franz.
