Plot

Jai (Fardeen Khan) is a fashion photographer, happily married to Geeta (Sonali Kulkarni). He meets Ria (Urmila Matondkar) in Goa. He takes photos of her without permission and publishes them in the magazine. The magazine becomes a huge hit because of those pictures. Vispy wants Ria to model for their magazine but she refuses because she is angry at Jai for publishing her pictures. Jai manages to convince her to model for their magazine. ) is really happy that her daughter is finally in love (he doesn't know its Jai). Ria, to talk to Jai about marriage, goes to his house and gets a shocking surprise that Jai is married to Geeta. Stubborn and always having her way, she can't believe that the guy she loved is married.

When a shaken Geeta asks for a breakup, Jai promises to change his ways. On the other hand, Ria is very possessive about Jai. She makes a suicide attempt, calls him in the middle of the night, visits Geeta in the hospital after injuring her and spins lies to sow the seed of doubt in Geeta's mind. Jai, meanwhile, tries to hold on to his sanity and marriage. Geeta tries not to let the doubts and suspicions creep in. Ria also stalks Geeta to eliminate her from Jai’s life forever.

Jai finally decides to move out of the city with Geeta to pursue a peaceful life. Ria realizes this and asks him to meet her one last time. He agrees and goes to her house to talk to her father about her. Ria uses this opportunity to visit Jai's house and tries to kill Geeta. When Jai reaches Ria's place, he discovers that Mr. Jaiswal is not home and waits for him. While waiting he calls Geeta and hears her shouting. Immediately he rushes home and finds Ria trying to kill her. To protect Geeta, he lies to Ria that he is ready to divorce his wife and start a new life with Ria. He assures her that he really loved her all this time, only he did not realize it. Ria believes him and comes to him; Jai smacks her hard. She falls to the floor bleeding. Her father arrives and, after clearing all misunderstandings, takes Ria home. Six months later, Geeta and Jai are happy with their life while Ria is housed at a mental hospital.

Pre-Production

This film showcases Urmila in a new sassy avatar with her hair finely cropped to shoulders. Grapevine has it that she herself created the look of her character in the film, from selecting her clothes to losing weight. Her new swanky hairdo and slinky clothes were talk of the town even before the film’s release.

Reviews

“All love stories make you fall in love, this one won’t,” says the promo of Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya.

Indeed this film is not yet another stereotyped Bollywood love story, which paints the hero in white and the villain in black to portray love as an exalted virtue. Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya is colorful. Colorful because director Rajat Mukherjee has imbued the characters in the film with the real shades. A suspicious wife, her infidel husband and his over-possessive mistress—all, it seems, have been lifted from life among higher sections of the society. Rajat Mukherjee deals with emotions like jealousy, envy, infatuation at all with the adeptness of a veteran. He also touches upon certain vague subtleties. Urmila grooves in perfectly as Riya. She convincingly portrays erratic moods of a person. He bubbly buoyancy will not go unnoticed. Particularly laudable is her depiction of two different shades of a same person. First, as vulnerable as any other girl and later a suicidal, she-of-the-killer-instinct, à la Glen Close in Hollywood hit Fatal Attraction
Fatal Attraction

, Urmila gives a power-packed performance.

The Fardeen-Urmila romance is hot and dangerously volatile. They are drawn closer to each other by violent passions at times, but impassive some other time. You can feel the sparks of the passion smoldering between them. But, in extracting performances from Fardeen and Urmila, Rajat Mukherjee fails to explore the marriage angle, neglecting Sonali Kulkarni's character completely. The actress doesn't really have much of a role, unfortunately. It is for a second time Urmila is portraying a character with psychotic shades. Her director is pretty impressed the way she has pulled off her role. Her performance in suicidal attempt scene from a high rise building is par excellence. Her locking horns with Sonali is also of highest order.
