The change from a rural district to an urban district occurred in 1934; with the new district retaining the same boundaries. The urban district was transferred from Middlesex to Hertfordshire in 1965.

South Mimms had been the only parish from Middlesex in the Barnet rural sanitary district, the rest of which had been in Hertfordshire

The South Mimms parish and rural district was affected by minor boundary changes in 1894, 1896, 1924 and 1926 In 1934 the rural district was abolished.

The rural district was replaced with Potters Bar Urban District, which covered the same area.
