It is named after the Russian navigator Constantine Possiet (1819—1899). It is one of the southernmost settlements in Russia.
It was established on April 11, 1860 as Novgorodsky-Posyet. The name Novgorodsky was given after the bay named by Muravyov-Amursky expedition; the latter name Posyet was named after Russian explorer Konstantin Posyet
. It is the oldest settlement in Primorsky Krai.
