It is the closest Irish port to mainland Europe and can handle lo-lo, bulk liquid, bulk solid and breakbulk/general cargoes.

The port is operated as a Port Company, under the 1996 Harbours Act. The nautical jurisdiction extends from Dunmore East and Hook Head on the seaward side and upriver past Waterford City. New Ross Port Company operates the waters of the confluent rivers of the River Nore
