 has two schools: the Elementary School (grades K-6) located on Clyde Lynch Drive, and the High School (grades 7-12) located on 20 Oak Street. The Elementary School was built to replace the aging Arnold School (1924) and Liberty School (1938); a time capsule was placed at the construction site by the 4th grade class president (Class of 1988) on January 20, 1981, to be opened in 100 years. It first received students in August 1981.

 would continue by boat. Originally, known as Canoe Place, the town’s name was changed to Port Allegany in 1838. Lumber and tanning industries grew as a result of the river and then the railways. In the 1800s natural gas was discovered which led to the expansion of industries including glass firms, chemical plants, cheese factories, machine shops, brick plants, sawmills, planing mills, tanneries and furniture factories.

Today, Port Allegany is best known for its glass manufacturing, Pittsburgh Corning Corporation, which is the only producer of glass blocks in the United States, and Saint-Gobain
