Description

The subfamily Polycnemoideae is distinguishable from all other members of Amaranthaceae by normal secondary growth. The stomata of the leaves are arranged in parallel to the midveins. The flowers have conspicuous chartaceous, scarious,
white or pinkish tepals. The filaments are united in a short but distinct filament tube (like in Amaranthoideae

Distribution

The Polycnemoideae are distributed in the temperate regions of Europa, Asia, North America and Australia.

Taxonomy

The taxon was recognized in 1827 as Tribus Polycnemeae within the Chenopodiaceae family by Dumortier

(in Prodromus systematis naturalis.... Vol 13). E. Ulbrich raised it to subfamilial level in 1934, again within Chenopodiaceae (in Engler & Prantl: Die natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien. Vol 16c).
Phylogenetic research revealed, that the Polycnemoideae are a basal lineage of evolution within the Amaranthaceae (now comprising both former families).

The Polycnemoideae comprises 3 genera
  • Hemichroa R.Br., with 3 species in Australia
  • Nitrophila

Nitrophila is a small genus of flowering plants in the amaranth family sometimes known by the common name niterworts. The genus name is Greek for "soda-loving", as the plant grows in alkaline or salty soils, such as those rich in borax. These are rhizomatous perennials with fleshy foliage that...
