Users create their own stations by seeding songs, artists, albums, or genres, all of which can be banned or de-emphasized directly from the station editor.

Station names can also be customized, but cannot be the same as another's station. For example, since CBS Radio already has a Southern Rock station, that name cannot be used. Besides the name, taglines and descriptions of each station can also be customized.

Users can choose whether each station plays just the hits (i.e., songs from compilations), plays rarities, or a mix thereof. Users can also choose whether to weight the station to emphasize their seeds or to play similar music alongside their seeds.

All limits associated with other CBS Radio services apply to play.it stations.

On February 4, 2010, all CBS radio stations have banned all non U.S. listeners from streaming online content. CBS Radio redirects to a paid service for non U.S. listeners.

In May 2010, Play.it announced their new player with a new full browser layout

As of 2011, play.it has been experiencing numerous problems. These problems have been expressed on their customer feedback forums.

Problems include:
  • Errors when trying to create or modify stations ranging from the station not loading, difficulty editing the station, or difficulty submitting changes
  • Delayed recognition of new/abandoned stations or station edits (in some cases, the name will be recognized as having been used, but the station never exists)
