 is John Stewart.

Students are assigned student numbers that begin with 52, followed by the two-digit year in which they entered the system, and a unique 6 digit number.

Like other Florida school districts, Pinellas County Schools has had to deal with issues of desegregation, court-ordered busing, and school choice. In 2000, the district received "unitary" (desegregated) status from the court which was monitoring integration issues, and from 2003 to 2007 was operating a "controlled choice" program which sets minimum and maximum percentages of black pupils in individual schools. In 2007 the "Choice program" was replaced with a "close to home school" program, where students go to the school that is nearest to their residence. Exceptions to this plan are the fundamental schools, and the High Schools with Academies of Excellence, both which require application and acceptance.

Pinellas County Schools announced, in March 2009, that all schools will be closing one hour earlier every Wednesday during the 2009-10 school year. Pinellas County Schools said that this controversial schedule change was to provide teachers with more planning period time.
