Pima Air & Space Museum
Encyclopedia
The Pima Air & Space Museum features a display of nearly 300 aircraft spread out over 80 acres (320,000 m²) on a campus occupying 127 acres (610,000 m²). Located in Tucson
, Arizona
, it is one of the world's largest, non-government funded aerospace
museums. It is also home since 1991 to the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame
.
Opened to the public in May 1976 with 48 aircraft
on display, the Museum's main hangar houses an SR-71A Blackbird, an A-10 Warthog, an Air Force Through the Years exhibit, and a mock-up of a control tower.
The museum is adjacent to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base
. The 309 th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), affiliated with the base, also known as the "Graveyard of Planes" or "The Boneyard", is the largest aircraft storage and preservation facilities
in the world. Bus tours of the boneyard leave from the museum several times a day from Monday to Friday.
The nearby Titan Missile Museum
is run by the Pima Air & Space Museum. It is located south of Tucson in Green Valley off of Interstate 19 and features a Titan II intercontinental ballistic missile
still in its silo. Tours of the above-ground and underground installations around the missile are conducted daily.

Based on the Boeing C-97 cargo plane and the 377 airliner the huge "Guppy" super-transports are some of the most unique aircraft ever built. This is the second Guppy, the first "Super Guppy" built. Its parts came from at least two different aircraft. The majority of the airframe came from a former Pan American Airways airliner. However the wings, engines and forward fuselage came from one of the Air Force's experimental turbo-prop powered YC-97J aircraft, 52-2693. The Super Guppy continued in use by NASA until 1991 when it was retired in favor of a younger Super Guppy.

Bede BD-5J Bede BD-5 Registration: N505MR Markings: From a BD-5J seen in the James Bond film "Octopussy," 1983. The BD-5 proved to be a challenge both to build and to fly. While many kits were sold they often proved to be beyond the abilities of most homebuilders to complete and even when finished the tiny aircraft require a very competent pilot to fly them safely. In 1973, Bede Aircraft introduced a jet-powered version the BD-5J. This aircraft still holds the record as the world's smallest jet aircraft and is a popular air show performer. A BD-5J was made famous by its appearance in the James Bond film "Octopussy."

One of three 707-153s bought "off-the-shelf" and converted to military use, this aircraft was completed as a VC-137A by Boeing Aircraft of Seattle, Washington on April 7, 1959. On May 30, 1959 this aircraft was accepted by the U. S. Air Force, painted in Military Air Transport Service colors (white top with extensive Day-Glo orange) and markings and assigned to the 1298th Air Transport (Special Missions) Squadron at Andrews AFB, MD with a deployment to Washington National Airport in Washington, DC. In June 1961, the aircraft was assigned to the 1254th Air Transport (Special Missions) Wing, Andrews AFB.

Cessna UC-78B Bobcat: Cessna AT-17

The name Bobcat was selected in a contest run by Cessna in their factory while in Army service it got the nickname "Bamboo Bomber" for its wooden construction. Cessna built a total of 5,399 aircraft of the type for civil and military use.
Columbia XJL-1: Columbia JL Serial Number: 31400 Registration: N54205 Markings: U.S. Navy, Patuxent River NAS, 1947. The Columbia XJL-1 was intended as a replacement for the Grumman J2F Duck amphibious biplane for the United States Navy. There were three XJL-1s built. One was used for destructive strength testing and the other two were used for flight-testing. This is the last of the three; completed in 1946 and accepted by the Navy on October 29, 1947 it was assigned to Patuxent River Naval Air Station for testing.

Serial Number: 52-2827 Markings: 95th Bomb Wing, Biggs AFB, El Paso, Texas. The B-36 is the largest bomber and the last piston engine powered bomber produced by the United States. First designed to meet a World War II requirement for a plane capable of hitting targets in Germany from bases in the United States the prototype did not fly until August 8, 1946.

This aircraft flew off one of the two Great Lakes paddlewheel steamers were converted into aircraft carriers. The USS Wolverine and USS Sable sailed from Chicago's Navy Pier each day to let new aviators practice landing and taking off from ships. The combination of new pilots and the inherently dangerous activity of landing on a moving ship resulted in many aircraft littered across the bottom of southern Lake Michigan. Fortunately for future historians Lake Michigan has just the right combination of depth, cold and fresh water to preserve these aircraft.

Gluhareff EMG-300 : (in storage) Serial Number: 1 Markings: Eugene M. Gluhareff, 1994. Designed in the early 1990s the EMG-300 is a homebuilt design with a very professional pedigree. Its builder, Eugene M Gluhareff had a long career of helicopter, jet, and rocket development. He first worked for Sikorsky Aircraft in the 1940s on helicopter design, later he worked for the American Helicopter Company on the design for a rotor-tip pulse jet–powered helicopter for the U.S. military. He later joined the Douglas Aircraft Company and worked on several rocket projects including the Saturn rocket for the Apollo program. Along the way he invented the pressure jet engine that powers the EMG-300. This engine uses propane for fuel and contains no moving parts. In the 1970s he started his own company to continue development of the pressure jet and vehicles to make use of it. His main interest was the use of the jets for rotor-tip jet-powered helicopters including several backpack helicopter designs, and the EMG-300. Other uses have included powered hang gliders and even a go-kart. The EMG-300 was his last design before his death in 1994, it had completed an initial series of test flights, but was not completely tested at the time of his death.

The majority of the parts came from a Canadian aircraft built at Fort William, Ontario in 1942. That plane crashed in Lake St. Johns, Quebec on March 27, 1944. Parts of at least five Hurricanes went into the construction of this and one other restored aircraft. The aircraft was loaned to the Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Addison, Texas for several years before being sold. In early 2006 the Military Aircraft Restoration Corporation loaned it to the Pima Air and Space Museum.

The Helton Lark is the result of several brief attempts to turn the World War II era Culver PQ-8 target drone into a civilian sport plane. Despite the aircraft's good speed and handling the low payload of less than 600 pounds resulted in a very limited interest in the aircraft. The Lark Aviation Company in Tracy, California was the first to attempt to manufacture the aircraft. Beginning in 1961, two years of redesign and testing resulted in a modernized and improved aircraft with plywood covered wings in place of fabric, a fiberglass cowling, sliding canopy, and aerodynamic improvements. Production began and ended in 1963. In 1965, the Helton Aircraft Corporation of Mesa, Arizona acquired the rights to the Lark 95 and began production late in 1966. Production continued into the first part of 1967 when the last attempt at producing the Lark ended.

Mitchell/Warr B-10 Mitchell Wing: Serial Number: 285 Registration: N4232A Markings: Peter McEvoy, 1993. Designer Don Mitchell built his first airplane in 1929 while still in high school. Along with sailplane designer Hawley Bowlus he founded Bowlus Sailplanes Inc. in 1937. The company produced kit planes such as the Baby Albatross. During World War II they built CG-4A gliders for the U.S. Army. The Mitchell Wing began as a foot-launched hang glider in 1975. Soon thereafter a powered version called the B-10 followed. This version is manufactured of wood, aluminum tubing, and fiberglass, covered with Ceconite fabric. The A-10 version is a factory built of all aluminum construction. Mitchell Wings have been used to set several distance and altitude records for microlight aircraft and hang gliders.

Markings: Horace Pentecost, 1945 The Hoppicopter is a part of the long quest for a truly low-cost personal flying machine. It was designed by Horace Pentecost of Seattle, Washington during World War II. He marketed it to the U.S. military as a replacement for the parachutes used by paratroops. The design consists of a small 20 horsepower motor powering two counter-rotating sets of rotor blades, strapped to the back of the pilot. The greatest weakness of the design was its use of the pilot's legs as landing gear. If he stumbled during landing or take-off the blades would quickly turn into thousands of potentially lethal splinters as they pounded themselves to bits on the ground. This was, quite correctly, seen as ridiculously hazardous and the idea was quickly abandoned.

Based on the Boeing C-97 cargo plane and the 377 airliner the huge "Guppy" super-transports are some of the most unique aircraft ever built. This is the second Guppy, the first "Super Guppy" built. Its parts came from at least two different aircraft. The majority of the airframe came from a former Pan American Airways airliner. However the wings, engines and forward fuselage came from one of the Air Force's experimental turbo-prop powered YC-97J aircraft, 52-2693. The Super Guppy continued in use by NASA until 1991 when it was retired in favor of a younger Super Guppy.

Gluhareff EMG-300 : (in storage) Serial Number: 1 Markings: Eugene M. Gluhareff, 1994. Designed in the early 1990s the EMG-300 is a homebuilt design with a very professional pedigree. Its builder, Eugene M Gluhareff had a long career of helicopter, jet, and rocket development. He first worked for Sikorsky Aircraft in the 1940s on helicopter design, later he worked for the American Helicopter Company on the design for a rotor-tip pulse jet–powered helicopter for the U.S. military. He later joined the Douglas Aircraft Company and worked on several rocket projects including the Saturn rocket for the Apollo program. Along the way he invented the pressure jet engine that powers the EMG-300. This engine uses propane for fuel and contains no moving parts. In the 1970s he started his own company to continue development of the pressure jet and vehicles to make use of it. His main interest was the use of the jets for rotor-tip jet-powered helicopters including several backpack helicopter designs, and the EMG-300. Other uses have included powered hang gliders and even a go-kart. The EMG-300 was his last design before his death in 1994, it had completed an initial series of test flights, but was not completely tested at the time of his death.

The majority of the parts came from a Canadian aircraft built at Fort William, Ontario in 1942. That plane crashed in Lake St. Johns, Quebec on March 27, 1944. Parts of at least five Hurricanes went into the construction of this and one other restored aircraft. The aircraft was loaned to the Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Addison, Texas for several years before being sold. In early 2006 the Military Aircraft Restoration Corporation loaned it to the Pima Air and Space Museum.

The Helton Lark is the result of several brief attempts to turn the World War II era Culver PQ-8 target drone into a civilian sport plane. Despite the aircraft's good speed and handling the low payload of less than 600 pounds resulted in a very limited interest in the aircraft. The Lark Aviation Company in Tracy, California was the first to attempt to manufacture the aircraft. Beginning in 1961, two years of redesign and testing resulted in a modernized and improved aircraft with plywood covered wings in place of fabric, a fiberglass cowling, sliding canopy, and aerodynamic improvements. Production began and ended in 1963. In 1965, the Helton Aircraft Corporation of Mesa, Arizona acquired the rights to the Lark 95 and began production late in 1966. Production continued into the first part of 1967 when the last attempt at producing the Lark ended.

Along with sailplane designer Hawley Bowlus he founded Bowlus Sailplanes Inc. in 1937. The company produced kit planes such as the Baby Albatross. During World War II they built CG-4A gliders for the U.S. Army. The Mitchell Wing began as a foot-launched hang glider in 1975. Soon thereafter a powered version called the B-10 followed. This version is manufactured of wood, aluminum tubing, and fiberglass, covered with Ceconite fabric. The A-10 version is a factory built of all aluminum construction. Mitchell Wings have been used to set several distance and altitude records for microlight aircraft and hang gliders.

It was designed by Horace Pentecost of Seattle, Washington during World War II. He marketed it to the U.S. military as a replacement for the parachutes used by paratroops. The design consists of a small 20 horsepower motor powering two counter-rotating sets of rotor blades, strapped to the back of the pilot. The greatest weakness of the design was its use of the pilot's legs as landing gear. If he stumbled during landing or take-off the blades would quickly turn into thousands of potentially lethal splinters as they pounded themselves to bits on the ground. This was, quite correctly, seen as ridiculously hazardous and the idea was quickly abandoned.
