 located there (one of only three such plants in the United States). The population was 1,907 at the 2000 census. Originally called Jefferson, it was the county seat of Pike County from 1815–1845, when it was decided by James Emmitt, a wealthy local entrepreneur, to move the county seat to Waverly due to its closer proximity to the then new Ohio & Erie Canal. It is not a large town, but a village. It is the location of the Pike County Fairgrounds, and is served by the Scioto Valley School District.

Perhaps the best-known historic resident of Piketon was Robert Lucas

The racial makeup of the village was 96.22% White, 1.10% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 2.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.26% of the population.
