This place originally was called Piazza alla Croce for the presence of the majestic Porta alla Croce; today around Porta alla Croce there are some concave neoclassical palaces.

On the square, at the bifurcation of the Giovine Italia and Amendola boulevards, overlook the building that host the State Archives, where until 1977 upraised the Casa della Gioventù Italiana del Littorio of Florence
