This area was annexed to Chennai in 1742 AD.

Perambur is considered a perfect mixture of commercial and residential hub. Madhavaram High Road, is one of the busiest streets in Perambur. It is famous for its jewelry and pharmacies. It also features a busy grocery market.

This led to the cost of the proposed flyover shoot from Rs.21 crore (210 millions) to Rs 34 crore (340 millions). The flyovers became the centre of political debacle to follow for the next 5 years (http://www.hinduonnet.com/fline/fl1814/18141320.htm). After DMK came back to power in 2006,it started working on the project once again but this time with an even more shooting up of the proposed cost. This flyover will be very useful for the people living in Perambur, Kolathur, T.V.K. Nagar, Periyarnagar, Aynavaram and Madhavaram.

The Flyover was constructed with different plan and was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister Mr. Karunanidhi and the then Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Stalin on 28 March 2010 (During 2006-11's DMK regime) which clears all the traffic in and around North Chennai. A very huge flyover of 1.3 km in length and 13 meters high from the ground level, which is one of the tallest bridge in Chennai after Kathipara, Guindy. The Bridge consist of three berths namely Road transport below level and Rail Transport at the middle level and again road transport at the upper level

Administration

The current Member of Legislative Assembly for the Perambur constituency is Soundararajan from the CPI-M party (an alliance of ADMK). Perambur is bifurcated by two other constituencies, namely that of Kolathur and Thiru-Vi-Ka-Nagar . It also falls under the North Chennai constituency for the Lok Sabha elections. Perambur comes under the 51st, 52nd and 53rd wards of the Chennai City Corporation.
