People's Economic Council

The People's Economic Council (German: Volkswirtschaftsrat (VWR)) of the German Democratic Republic was established in July 1961 as a successor to the Department of Industry and the Department for Material Supply, both of which had previously been subordinate to the State Plan Commission. The purpose of the Council was to serve as an independent "central state body" for the management of industry, national and local, and to determine how to allocate the means of production

The Council drafted on the basis of the decisions of the Council of Ministers, the Perspektivplanes, the guide ratios and the guidelines of the State Plan Commission the annual plan for the industry, and realized through its industry units, and VVB the economic councils of the districts in the industry, the Code of the SED and the government established principles of economic policy.
