. Today the area is relatively unchanged and the marshy, windswept prairies are almost the same as they were in 1865. Today over 5,400 acres are protected under the National Register of Historic Places list. The only sign anything happened here however is a marker on the "Boca Chica Highway" (HWY 4) near where Palmito Ranch originally stood.
