Plot

In an organization of professional killers called Thanatos, there exists an elite assassin. Fighting for the ranking of No. 1, the curtain rises on a battle fought with blood over blood.

Characters

The main protagonist. In Chapter 1, it was shown that his family was killed by Tekirai eleven years ago, when he was just a child and for that reason he joined the guild.

Tekirai is the Number 1 ranked hitman of the Thanatos. He was the one who killed Toneriko's family ten years ago. Because of his established position, he is said to be the closest person to Yggdrasil. He bears a long sword on his back called 'World End'.

Aralagi is the Number 3 ranked hitman of the Thanatos. He wears glasses and his actions are quite physchotic. He has Edelweiss (his marionette) do everything, therefore he himself has not been seen fighting before.

Sakura is the Number 4 ranked hitman of the Thanatos. He hates Toneriko because of his quick development and rise in the ranks. He and Toneriko fight because he gravely injured Mizuto. He dies though.

A friend of Toneriko's who has the ability to heal injuries, and he will always heal Toneriko when he sees him injured, much to Toneriko's chagrin. He is currently working as a gardening apprentice. Toneriko is rather attached to him. Mizuto states that while he stands in the light, Toneriko stands in the darkness.

Araragi's "marionette" who wears a maid's outfit. She is very capable in combat.

Anzu is the Number 9 ranked hitman of Thanatos. "Her" weapon is a parasol that can shoot spikes of ice from the tip. Anzu can create ice as a weapon and uses a parasol as a medium for "her" attacks, chapter 13. It was revealed in chapter 8 that "she" is a "he", and "she" is a cross-dresser.

Akagane is part of an organization against Thanatos, Honeybee, which is composed of ex-Numbers. He was formerly No.3. He infiltrates Number in chapter 10 to kill No.8 and No.7, but is driven off by Toneriko. He's primary target is Tekirai, not Thanatos. This is due to the fact that Tekirai was the man who ruined his life.

Zakuro is Number 6. She is also a cross-dresser, but unlike Anzu, she is an intersexual. It is revealed in chapter 13 that she uses fire as her weapon.
