Its founder was Nawab Zafar Jung, an England-educated rich noble man. Taken over by the government in 1907, the observatory for years worked on an ambitious programme of photographing and charting a large segment of the sky.

The observatory is believed to have cataloged more than a lakh stars, exposed thousands of photos during Nizam period.

It was located at old Begumpet
