The Depot Station houses a museum that is open to the public free of charge by appointment and on special community event days. On 2/02/11 a semi was hit by a train at the crossing west of the depot, the semi landed within ten feet of the depot but caused no building damage. No one was reported injured in this even and the train itself acquired little damage, stopping prior to blocking the crossing located to the est of the depot.

Every year, the town holds a celebration of Depot Days, it includes a pancake breakfast, parade, cake walk, karaoke on the street, street vendors, night time street dance and numerous other activities. Recently, February 2011, some financial controversy has arose in that a society that calls itself Historical Society and the solicitation of funds along with profits relating to the community event that were not turned over to the city. Currently there is a lawsuit involving individuals whose names are listed as withdrawees on a bank account using the City of Newbern's tax number- the information was located during a routine audit of the city's accounts. The city plans to continue with Depot Day plans despite this issue.
