The NRHP is the United States government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects deemed worthy of preservation. A property listed on the National Register, or located within a National Register Historic District, may qualify for tax incentives derived from the total value of expenses incurred preserving the property. . The 19th century brought a boom in transportation in Albany, leading to both economic and population growth. Immigrants developed tight-knit neighborhoods, many of which now comprise the city's 14 historic districts. Churches, eight of which are listed, sprung up to meet the needs of the new population. State and federal government are responsible for seven of the listed properties (from municipal buildings to armories to one Navy destroyer escort

). City government built at least three of the sites on the Register. The turn of the 20th century saw the building of a grand train station. Later in the century a vaudeville theatre, railcar diner, and two distinct neighborhoods were built and later recognized on the Register.
