The 5 member Electric Power Board of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville
and Davidson County (the "Power Board") was established in 1939 when TVA purchased TEPCO or Tennessee Electric Power Co. for 79 million dollars. After the purchase, the five hundred employees of TEPCO become employees of the newly created Nashville Electric Service.
NES is the operating name of the Electric Power Board of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County. The five member Board is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Council. Members of the Board serve five-year staggered terms without pay. The Board appoints a chief executive officer who has responsibility for day-to-day operations, including hiring of employees.
