The organization was formed in 1999 through the combination of the New York Convention & Visitors Bureau and with New Yorkers for New York: the Permanent Host Committee, a business group promoting major destination events in the city. Over 1,800 organizations are members of NYC & Company, including museums, hotels, restaurants, retail stores, theaters, tour organizations, and attractions. NYC & Company has an annual budget of approximately $16 million, 40% of which comes directly from New York City.

Furthermore, NYC & Company produces and plans some of its own events and programming, including CultureFest, Just Ask the Locals and NYC Sunday Stays which promote different aspects of New York City
