The title was originally known as the SMCW Heavyweight Championship when Southern Michigan Championship Wrestling opened in 1997, then the NWA Michigan Heavyweight Championship when SMCW joined the NWA and became NWA of Michigan. Finally, in 2000, the title's name changed for the final time when NWA of Michigan became NWA Great Lakes.
