Born in Ceres, McKean County, Pennsylvania, McCord attended Richburg Academy, New York.

He moved to Wisconsin in 1854 and settled in Shawano, Shawano County. He moved to Merrill in 1875, where he became a lumberman and farmer, and published a newspaper between 1868 and 1883. McCord served as a member of the Wisconsin State Senate
