The most famous politician of the city is Rana Tanveer Hussain who is also famous for his corruption and criminal record. He is considered behind the most of the murders and robberies in the area. He was convicted in corruption cases by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and released on Plea Bargaining. The election of Rana Tanveer Hussain on two seats is clear example of the mind-set of the people of the area. He became minister for a short period under Gillani cabinet. He was the first MNA named as minister by Nawaz Sharif after winning 2008 election along-with PPP. This shows the political acumen of Nawaz Sharif and his party.

Coming back to Muridke, the city used to be a wealthy city in Punjab because of the industries situated near Muridke. Two big industrial plants in Asia (Ravi Ryon and Ittehad Chemicals) were situated near Muridke and it was believed that more than 10 million rupees are dispersed among the people of Muridke in shape of salaries every month.

More than anything else, Muridke is known for being the headquarters of the terror organization Laskhar-e-Tayyaba.
