History

Washington first sent delegates to Miss America in 1939 and 1940, following which there was an eight year hiatus before the pageant was revived in 1948, with a $1000 scholarship being offered to the winner. In 1949 the pageant was a "financial flop" and the winner had to seek community donations to fund her appearance at Miss America. At the time the organization was so deeply in debt that the titleholder's tiara was nearly repossessed by the manufacturer.

In 1948 and 1948 the Miss Washington pageant was held in Ephrata

Two Miss Washington titleholders resigned during their reigns and a third came under scrunity when her residency was questioned. In 1974 Kathleen Beth Moore resigned after placing top ten at Miss America, claiming that pageant officials wanted her "cold and aloof" and encouraged her to become thinner. Two years later winner Sharon Lambert faced shoplifting charges and resigned prior to competing at Miss America. In 1990 Lynnae Thurick a three-time Miss Oregon

The most successful Miss Washingtons were Annamae Schoonover (1939), Sharon Joyce Vaughn (1959), and Elyse Umemoto (2007), who all placed second runner-up at Miss America. Umemoto, the first titleholder of Native American heritage, later courted scandal when embarrassing photos of her appeared on the internet. "The fact is that these pictures were stolen from me," she told reporters. "I want to be clear about this: none of these pictures were taken during my year of service as Miss Washington."
