Potential contestants should be at least five feet seven inches (1.7 m) in height, between the ages of seventeen and twenty-four, and unmarried without children. In addition, they must be citizens of the Irish Republic, either born or naturalised. All contestants must come from "a background which is not likely to bring into disrepute the pageant or the organisers".

The current titleholder is Holly Carpenter from Dublin; she was also named Miss University Ireland prior to winning Miss Ireland.
