Background Minimal Wave is a genre of electronic music that became most prominent from the period 1979 - 1986.
Today many of the more obscure 80's New Wave bands are known as Minimal Wave.
Mainly defined by the use of the simplest and most minimalist musical structures, the sound of Minimal Wave was hallmarked by the sole use of synthesizers and drum machines originally. However, the "wave" element came in when first artists evolving from this movement also started incorporating electric guitars into their music.
Further music genres related to Minimal Wave are Coldwave, Dark Wave, Electronica, Electropop, Flexi Pop, Minimal Electronic, Minimal Synth, Synthpunk and Technopop.
Many of the first Minimal Wave bands were inspired by Punk subculture's DIY attitude as well as by electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk.
