It was founded in 1786 and named after its founder, the army officer Ivan Abramovich Müller. At the end of the 19th century it became an important part of the Rostov-Voronezh-Kozlovskaya railway.

It was granted town status in 1926.

Five kilometers northwest of the town is the Millerovo military airfield. At the airfield was stationed the headquarters of the 16th Guards Fighter Aviation Division
