While showmen pitching miraculous cures have been around since classical times, the advent of mixed performance and medicine sales in western culture originated during the Dark Ages

Medicine shows flourished in the late 1800s, particularly in the midwestern United States and the rural South. They had their origin in the patent medicine vendors who set up booths at local fairs in Colonial America. As early as 1773 laws were being passed against their excesses.

 performed a scene as part of "The Goodies Travelling Medicine Show" in an episode of their series entitled 'Hospital For Hire'. The scene included a plant from the audience (Tim) being pulled from the audience to 'prove' that the mystery elixir cured all ailments.

In 2001, composer Bobby Nafarrete and bookwriter Brian Granger created a musical comedy play called "MEDICINE SHOW."

An event called the Black Dog Medicine Show, featuring a resurgence of soulful musical anachronisms and sideshow antics, takes place in Eugene, Oregon every fall to raise money for charity.

"The Medicine Park Buffalo Elixir Medicine Show" which began in 2004 is performed several times a year in the Wichita Mountain area of Oklahoma. The troupe bases their skits after original skits modifying for the locale. The Wagon used in the performance is a handbuilt replica of a turn of the century wagon. The show incorporates songs, humorous skits and cures.
