Early life
Mark Burnett was born in London, United Kingdom, and was an only child. From 1978-1982 he served with the Parachute Regiment in Northern Ireland and the Falklands War. In 1982, Burnett moved to Los Angeles, U.S., and for the next decade held a variety of jobs, including a nanny in Beverly Hills and selling t-shirts in Venice Beach.
Career Continued One of the driving forces behind reality television and a true visionary, Mark Burnett has a long history of Executive Producing Emmy Award®-winning television. Burnett’s entrepreneurial spirit pioneered the success of the reality “unscripted” drama series, garnered skyrocketing ratings and introduced millions worldwide to an entirely new television genre.
Burnett began his career in unscripted drama when he created the adventure series Eco-Challenge. He has since served as executive producer on nine Eco-Challenge events and programs. Eco-Challenge: British Columbia earned him a 1996 Sports Emmy Award nomination and a 1997 International Documentary Association Award nomination. In 2000, Burnett received a Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Program Achievement for Eco-Challenge: Morocco, and was awarded the prestigious Banff Rockie Award in the Sports Program Category by the 2000 Banff Rockie Awards Festival. In addition, he received an Emmy Award nomination for Eco-Challenge: Borneo in September, 2001.
In 2000 Burnett broke into prime time television with the hit reality skein, Survivor, now airing its 18th season. Its debut season won two Primetime Emmy’s and earned him six Emmy nominations total in 2001. The series was again nominated for four Emmy’s in 2002 and 2003; five Emmy’s in 2004 and in 2005. In January 2004, Survivor earned the award for Favorite Reality Based Television Program at the 30th Annual People’s Choice Award, with a nomination for the 2005 awards. Survivor: Pearl Islands was nominated for the 2004 Producers Guild Award in the Reality/Game/Informational Series.
Having produced nine worldwide Eco-Challenge races and series, eighteen Survivor series on CBS, and Combat Missions which aired on USA Network in 2002, Mark Burnett continues to break new ground in the “reality” and “unscripted drama” genre. Now airing is the eighth season of The Apprentice (NBC), with Donald Trump again at its helm. Burnett expanded the Apprentice franchise with 2005’s The Apprentice: Martha Stewart. This brilliant move highlights Burnett’s growing partnership with the media mogul, partnering with Stewart for a syndicated daytime show, Martha, which launched in September 2005.
NBC premiered The Apprentice in Spring 2003 and it quickly became the top rated new series of the season, finishing with an average audience of 28 million people. Apprentice earned four 2004 Emmy nominations, was nominated for four Teen Choice Awards, for “Program of the Year” by the Television Critic’s Association, for the 2004 People’s Choice Awards, five Emmy nominations in 2005, and the 2005 Producer Guild Awards for nonfiction programming...
In March 2005, Burnett teamed up with DreamWorks for The Contender airing its first season on NBC in 2005. The Contender, a compelling unscripted drama back dropped against the sport of boxing, focused on a nationwide search for real American heroes and the chance to revitalize boxing, with the second season airing on ESPN in July 2006. The Contender earned two Emmy nominations in 2005 and in 2006. Burnett & CBS collaborated again, this time in a worldwide search for the next greatest rock superstar. In Summer 2005, the goal of the unscripted reality musician competition Rock Star was to find the new front man for super group INXS. In July 2006, Burnett began the search for the lead singer for Tommy Lee’s new band, Supernova, for a second season of Rock Star, which aired on CBS.
Burnett’s newest adventure on the horizon is his upcoming and much anticipated co-production with Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks Television, On The Lot. His partnership with AOL proved to be, once again, another successful team effort with the online adventure Gold Rush, the first-ever unscripted project produced exclusively for the internet.
Additional reality projects included, Boarding House: North Shore (WB), an unscripted drama about big wave surfing, aired Summer 2003; The Restaurant (NBC), a six-hour unscripted drama, first aired in summer 2003 and its second season in Spring 2004; and The Casino (Fox) in Summer 2004.
Burnett continued to diversify by bringing his story-telling expertise to the “scripted” world of television. Spring 2003 had Burnett partnering with Carsey-Werner-Mandabach to produce Are We There Yet, a scripted sitcom pilot for the WB. Burnett also partnered with Warner Brothers Television on two scripted project: the drama pilot Global Frequency and a scripted comedy pilot, Commando Nanny.
Burnett most recently received the prestigious “Foundation Award” from the International Radio & Television Society. In 2004, he was featured in Time Magazine’s “Time 100 List” of the most influential people in the world today and named one of the “Top 101 Most Powerful People in Entertainment” list by Entertainment Weekly for the last three consecutive years. In addition early 2004 at NATPE, he received the Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award recognizing individuals who have a unique passion and vision for television. He is also the latest recipient of the “Philanthropist of the Year” Award, presented by the Reality Cares Foundation. In; garnered the Number One position on TV Guide’s “Most Valuable Players” list; and earned the Number Two position on Access Hollywood’s “Top 10 in Entertainment 2000” list. Burnett was a recipient of a Special Recognition Award for Survivor from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD); was named in the Advertising Age Top 100 for 2001; and is a featured business leader in Variety’s 2001 “A Tradition of Trendsetting.” The Apprentice also won the FRAPA Format Award at the Rose D’or Festival in 2005, along with the Buzz Award in TV Product Placement for their Pontiac participation.
In addition to his producing credits, Burnett has authored two books about Survivor, a third book, DARE TO SUCCEED, and fourth, JUMP IN!, published in February 2005. He received medals for serving with the Parachute Regiment in Northern Ireland and the Falklands War. He also served two elected terms on the Board of Directors for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in Los Angeles and is a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Currently, Burnett serves on the Board of Directors of the Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric Aids Foundation.
Burnett mentioned in his book that he had pre-sold the idea of an raid type adventure show to MTV Networks but never mentioned in his book how he was able to secure the deal beforehand leaving some to speculate that, in fact, someone else had produced the rights for him.
For the first season of Survivor, Burnett was paid an estimated $10,455,000. He received a staggering $10 million alone from ad revenue and a $455,000 licensing fee. At the close of the first season it was agreed by Burnett and CBS CEO Les Moonves that Burnett would no longer participate in ad revenue sharing but would be given a per episode $1,000,000 license fee. Considering Survivor, on average, has around fifteen episodes, Burnett takes home close to $15,000,000 a season. Survivor is now in its 17th season, making Burnett a very wealthy individual with a net worth in the $300,000,000 - $400,000,000 range.
It was recently announced that Mark Burnett has teamed up with Rap Mogul and Icon Sean "Diddy" Combs to find the hottest solo acts to sign to Diddy's record label Bad Boy Entertainment. Diddy who is known for his hit show Making the Band usually sets his sights on the hottest performers and creating groups but due to Mr. Burnetts overwhleming success and genius has chosen to broaden his horizons. The new show "Starmaker" is set to air this winter on MTV.
