Marja (Akhbari)
Encyclopedia
The word Marja is from the root word "rujoo" which means to "turn towards". In traditional Shi'a Islam, it refers to a person who has the ability to transmit the traditions of the infallibles and is to be consulted in all religious matters. This doctrine is based on the following tradition narrated from the hidden Imam:

Fa ammal hawadith al waqaya fa irjao ila ruate ahadithena

When a matter befalls yee, turn to the transmitters of our traditions.

This definition of Marja is contrary to that in the Usooli
Usooli
Usulis are the majority Twelver Shi'a Muslim group. They differ from their now much smaller rival Akhbari group in favoring the use of ijtihad i.e...

sect, as they believe a degree of doctorate grants a man the position of a Marja and thus authority to dictate religion.
