In 1925 in London, the Northern Paraná Land Company was established. It was responsible for the settling of more than 500,000 acres in the northern part of the State, which today contains some of the biggest cities of Paraná.
History
The region's fertile land encouraged São Paulo colonists to move in and acquire new areas for production. The north of Paraná encloses nearly 100 thousand km². It is watered by the Rivers Paranapanema, Paraná, Ivaí and Piquiri.
The region is divided into three areas (according to time of settlement), Old North, New North and Latest North.
The urban project requested by the British Company Improvements North of the Paraná (Cia de Melhoramentos) and elaborated by the city planner Jorge Macedo Vieira, defined the outlines of the new city. Maringá was raised to the category of city on 14 February 1951.
The Company, worried about deforestation proceeding from the occupation foreseen in the urbanistics projects, reserved three great ecological areas inside of the urban limits: the Forest Horto, the Park of the Ingá and Forest II. The service sector is
Maringá's largest (76,74%), followed by industrial (22,29%) and finally farming (0,97%). Within industry, the food-processing, chemical and textile sectors predominate (source: Paraná City).
The productive structure of Maringá includes 6,152 companies in service, 5,553 in commerce and 1,327 in the industry; 8 in farming and the 1 in the mineral extraction (47.2% services, 42.6% commerce and 10.2% industry). In transport terms, 15 great companies employ 16,878 people; 142 averages 14,746 people; 859 small 19,526 people and the 12,016 microcompanies use 30,868 people. Most of the immigrants to northern Paraná originated from São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo.
The peak of the São Paulo migration to Paraná occurred in the decade of 1940 to 1950.
Nearly 40% of the local population has Italian origins, mainly from Veneto and the southern Italian regions such as Calabria, Napoli, Basilicatta.
Japanese immigration was also important. Other ethnic groups include the Portuguese, Spanish, French, British, Polish, Ukrainians, Swiss, Germans and Lebanese. Royal Garden building.
With the great expansion of coffee plantations in the State and the consequent increase of the labour force, the demographic density of the region increased from 8,9 to 75,9 persons/km².
Maringá hosts an important university, the State University of Maringá (UEM) The city has an
increasing student community with other institutions CESUMAR, the biggest private University in Maringa, Faculdades Maringa, Faculdades Nobel, Uninga, Uniandrade, South America Technological University and a campus of PUC PR with several Faculties.
Climate
Subtropical (well distributed rainfall).
Maringá is located in the southern hemisphere at the southern end of the Brazilian funnel on the Tropic of Capricorn, and is influenced by several macro-climatic factors - migration of the masses of air from the Atlantic, equatorial and tropical, low depression, in summer months.
In the winter there is infiltration of cold air masses from the polar front, and temperatures can fall to 22 degrees Fahrenheit. When this happens, the city is marked by the black ice that decimated agriculture in 1975.
The region's climate is subtropical; the average temperature of the coldest months is below 58°F and average annual temperatures around 68°F.
