Previous designations

The species was introduced in 1998 as Marburg virus. In 2002, the name was changed to Lake Viktoria marburgvirus. In 2010, a proposal was submitted to the ICTV to change the name to Marburg marburgvirus, and this proposal has recently been accepted by the ICTV Executive Committee. It has yet to be ratified.
