Autapomorphy
In cladistics, an autapomorphy is a distinctive anatomical feature, known as a derived trait, that is unique to a given terminal group. That is, it is found only in one member of a clade, but not found in any others or outgroup taxa, not even those most closely related to the group...

as the result of a size squeeze. Like birds, troodontids and dromaeosaurids did not retain small size throughout their evolutionary history, and had several separate size increases among different lineages. Mahakala also shows a combination of characteristics found among basal troodontids and birds, and is missing some that are present in more derived dromaeosaurids.

Paleoecology and paleobiology

The paleoenvironment of the Djadokhta Formation is interpreted as having a semiarid climate, with sand dune
Dune
In physical geography, a dune is a hill of sand built by wind. Dunes occur in different forms and sizes, formed by interaction with the wind. Most kinds of dunes are longer on the windward side where the sand is pushed up the dune and have a shorter "slip face" in the lee of the wind...
