. Original founders of the cove were of German and Irish decent. Although early attempts to establish a community failed, they eventually had success with the assistance of Capt. Jason Mace.

Capt. Mace was in charge of a shipping operation and is credited with stabilizing the community. Local historians believe he is responsible for naming the cove. It is believed he did so in honor of fellow community leader and friend David J. Mader.
