. He studied structure, cytology, reproduction and taxonomy of major group of algae. He is also known as "FATHER OF INDIAN PHYCOLOGY" or "FATHER OF ALGOLOGY IN INDIA".

The Dr M.O.P. Iyengar Memorial Award was instituted in 1983 by Mrs Rukmani Iyengar in memory of her husband Dr M.O.P. Iyengar.
