The book continues with the format of the first novel, with the story told in the first-person from the point of view of Cicero's secretary Tiro. It follows on immediately from Imperium; as it starts with the beginning of his consulship and ends with his exile due to Clodius.

For its release in the US and in Italy in 2010, it was retitled Conspirata.
