Elfriede Jelinek is an Austrian playwright and novelist. . Originally published in German in 1989, it was translated into English in 1992 by Michael Hulse. It tells the story of Herrman, a manager of a paper mill, and his wife, Gerti. Gerti is in a masochistic relationship with Herrman. At a ski resort, Gerti falls in love with Michael, a hopeful politician.

The novel is, like all of Jelinek's novels, lyrical and musical in its structure. It also features many acts of violence.
