when cutting stone or metal. In this last application, its weight drives the chisel more deeply into the material being cut than lighter hammers.

Weights range from 0.5 kg to 3 kg. The head is normally a heat treated forged steel, and handles are normally wood, usually hickory, or synthetic resin. Some hammers have a steel handle with both head and handle forged as a single piece, but these are known to have injury potential for frequent users due to shock transmission.
