Route 183 swapped with route 83
in the Hendon area – the 183 via The Quadrant and The Bell and the 83 via Hendon Central.
The DMSs were replaced by Metrobuses
in 1980.
Hendon was closed in 1987 and the allocation was transferred to Metroline
's Harrow Weald garage and the DMS's returned and some single decks entered service. The 183 was extended from Northwood Station to Harrow Weald for Garage journeys, but was withdrawn between Pinner and Northwood on November 1987.
For a short period in 1999 the 183 was converted to single deck at using Dennis Dart SLFs when the route was transferred from Metroline to London Sovereign
at their Edgware (EW) and Harrow (HW) garages.
But this didn't work out too well because the 183 is a very busy route with passengers incorporating two local, large secondary schools, so 15 brand new low-floor Volvo B7TL

In December 2002 the route was named as the third most unreliable route in London during the period June to September 2002.
In 2008, the route was the subject to persistent theft. Gangs of pickpockets targeted old people, slashing their bags and stealing their money, keys and other possessions.
On 5 September 2009, route 183's contract was renewed, with Transdev retaining the route. The Monday to Saturday daytime frequency was increased to every 10 minutes, the PVR was increased and brand new Scania OmniCities where introduced.

History
This route began in 1937, running from Golders Green Station to Northwood Garage, via Brent Green, Kingsbury, Kenton, Harrow, North Harrow and Pinner. Operating from Hendon (AE), using STD type double deckers which were in turn replaced in 1953 by the RT-typeAEC Regent III RT
