While underground cables for voltages below 150 kV are very common and can be found in the area of most towns with more than 100000 inhabitants, the installation of power lines with voltages greater than 150000 volts is nearly almost done overhead. However this is not always possible or desired, especially in urban areas, on power plant areas and also for crossings of straits and rivers.
The following incomplete list contains AC cables for voltages above 150 kV. For DC underground and submarine cables, see List of HVDC projects and for more details the articles about the corresponding HVDC system ( if available).
