Therefore, after a re-election (ten years in power) an incumbent president is barred from running in the election. During its more than 180 years of independence, Peru has been ruled by the military leaders who fought for independence, the leaders of the War of the Pacific

Different titles have been used, such as "Liberator of Peru" (used by José de San Martin), and "Supreme Protector" (by Andrés de Santa Cruz).
