History

The town was named for John Limon (or Lymon), a railroad construction supervisor.

Limon was the site of one of the most gruesome lynching

s in American history on November 16, 1900. Preston Porter Jr, accused of the murder of a white girl, was led by rope through town, and then tied to a stake and burned while he was reading the Bible. He screamed out to be shot, but onlookers only heaped on more fuel, according to an article in the November 17, 1900 edition of The New York Times

On March 9, 2011, Limon Police Officer Jay Sheridan, a 6 1/2 year veteran of the force, was shot and killed while trying to serve a warrant on a 52 year old retired man residing in a mobile home at the Wagon Wheel Mobile Home Park in west Limon. At about 6:15PM, Sheridan, LPD Officer Russell Lingle, and Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputy Albert Leach were attempting to serve the warrant on behalf of the U.S. Marshal's Office out of Denver. Upon entering the residence, Sheridan was allegedly shot by the man.
