According to the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 4569.5 square miles (11,835 km²), of which 4564.16 square miles (11,821.1 km²) (or 99.88%) is land and 5.35 square miles (13.9 km²) (or 0.12%) is water. The highest point is Scott Peak at 11,393 feet (3472 m) above sea level, and the lowest point is the Salmon River
