The school first opened in September 2003. It offers majors in Dance, Figure Skating, Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Theatre, and Visual Art.

Students commute to the school everyday, drawing students from 40+ surrounding Pennsylvania school districts.

The student population is 449, with a high degree of ethnic and social diversity; There were 105 students in the senior class of 2008. The school celebrated their first four year graduates with the class of 2007 marking a major milestone for the school.

The faculty numbers 40, with 30 percent having advanced degrees, and an average of 7.1 years teaching experience. The current staff to student ratio is 1 to 9.1.

Students spend half of their school day studying in their artistic areas, and the other half in academic classes. There is no tuition at LVPA because it is a charter school

All students receive a GPA based on a 4.0 scale; however, LVPA does not rank and no courses are weighted. Pass/Fail courses are not included in the GPA.
