Lamp (electrical component)

A lamp is a replaceable component such as an incandescent light bulb
Incandescent light bulb

The incandescent light bulb, incandescent lamp or incandescent light globe is a source of electric light that works by incandescence, ....
, which is designed to produce light
Light

Light, or visible light, is electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength that is Visible spectrum to the human eye , or up to 380?750 nm. In the broader field of physics, light is sometimes used to refer to electromagnetic radiation of all wavelengths, whether visible or not....
 from electricity
Electricity

Electricity is a general term that encompasses a variety of phenomena resulting from the presence and flow of electric charge. These include many easily recognizable phenomena such as lightning and static electricity, but in addition, less familiar concepts such as the electromagnetic field and electromagnetic induction....
. These components usually have a base of ceramic, metal, glass or plastic, which makes an electrical connection in the socket of a light fixture
Light fixture

A light fixture is an electrical device used to create artificial light or illumination. A luminaire is a lighting fixture complete with the light source or lamp , the reflector for directing the light, an aperture , the outer shell or housing for lamp alignment and protection, an Ballast , if required, and connection to a power sour...
. This connection may be made with a screw-thread base, two metal pins, 2 metal caps or a bayonet cap.

Lamps in electronics

Filament lamps have long been used as fast acting thermistors in electronic circuits. Popular uses have included:
  • Stabilisation of sine wave oscillators
  • Protection of tweeters
  • Automatic volume control in telephones

Lamp circuit symbols

In circuit diagrams lamps usually are shown as symbols. For example, an electrician would not want to have to keep on drawing out light bulbs so symbols are used instead. There are two main types of symbols, these are:
Lamp Symbol
The cross in a circle, which usually represents a lamp as an indicator.
Lamp Symbol, Old
The semi-circled dent in a circle, which usually represents a lamp as a source of light or illumination.
