Lamination is the process of bonding two materials together to form a single whole. In picture lamination, the picture is sandwiched between two plastic sheets and the entire structure heated to form what is known as a "laminated card".
Lamination is used in several ways:
- as a form of protection for fragile materials such as when an identification card is laminated between two plastics sheets.
- as a way of displaying documents such as diplomas, certificates and some such; in this kind of lamination, the diploma or document is bonded to a backing such as wood and a special varnish added on the top to lock the document in.
- as a form of art such as when photographs are printed on acetate and then the acetate is laminated onto aluminum sheets.
- as a manufacturing process used to make laminated construction materials such as plywood and formica.
